Functional Features of CNC Milling Machines and Precautions for Lathe Operation

CNC milling machines are automated processing equipment developed on the basis of conventional milling machines. They share basically the same machining processes and have somewhat similar structures. CNC milling machines fall into two categories: those without a tool magazine and those with a tool magazine. A CNC milling machine equipped with a tool magazine is also known as a machining center.

In addition to the features of conventional milling machines, CNC milling offers the following advantages:

  1. High adaptability and flexibility for workpiece machining. It can process workpieces with extremely complex profiles or dimensions that are hard to control, such as mold parts and housing components.

  2. Capable of machining workpieces that cannot or can hardly be processed by conventional machine tools, including complex curved parts and 3D surface parts defined by mathematical models.

  3. A single clamping and positioning setup allows completion of workpieces requiring multiple machining procedures.

  4. High machining accuracy and stable, reliable processing quality. The pulse equivalent of CNC devices is generally 0.001 mm, and high-precision CNC systems can reach 0.1 μm. Besides, CNC machining eliminates human operating errors.

  5. High level of production automation reduces operators’ labor intensity and facilitates automated production management.

  6. High production efficiency. Generally, CNC milling machines do not require special fixtures or dedicated process equipment. When switching workpieces, operators only need to call the stored machining programs in the CNC unit, clamp tools and adjust tool parameters, greatly shortening the production cycle.

What precautions should be taken when using CNC machine tools? (1) Operators and maintenance personnel of CNC machine tools must be professionals with relevant machine tool expertise or trained technicians, and they shall operate the machine in accordance with safety operating procedures. (2) Non-professionals are not permitted to open the electrical cabinet door. Ensure the main power switch of the machine is turned off before opening the electrical cabinet. Only qualified maintenance personnel are allowed to conduct live maintenance with the cabinet open. (3) Except for certain parameters authorized for user modification, users must not alter other system parameters, spindle parameters, servo parameters, etc. Unauthorized changes may lead to damage to equipment and workpieces and personal injury. (4) After modifying parameters, run a test first with machine lock enabled, without tools or workpieces in single-block mode. Do not use the machine until normal operation is confirmed. (5) The machine PLC program is designed by the manufacturer according to machine requirements and shall not be modified. Improper modification or operation of the machine may cause equipment damage and even injury to operators. (6) It is recommended not to run the machine continuously for more than 24 hours. Excessively long continuous operation will shorten the service life of the electrical system and some mechanical assemblies and impair machine accuracy. (7) Do not plug or unplug any connectors and joints while the machine is powered on; otherwise, severe consequences will occur.
